St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, Vapi traces its origin back in 1979, when a handful of believers started as a congregation in Vapi. Since Vapi was a developing town with the development of many industries and factories. The members felt a sincere need of an organized and systematic form of worship in their lives, which led them to consult the then Vicar of Valsad Parish Rev. Fr. Koshy Plammoottil. He gave his able Spiritual leadership to the believers, which strengthened their faith. As the members began to pour in, they felt for the need of their own Parish, for which they consulted H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilos, the Metropolitan of Bombay Diocese. Thus through the great hard work and sincere prayers of several people, the dream of the establishment of the Vapi parish was fulfilled. It was named as St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church, Vapi. The first Holy Qurbana was celebrated on 27th December 1979 at Weslian Church, Vapi and this continued for the subsequent two years. In the year 1981, H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilos visited Vapi. The members along with the support of many well-wishers purchased a plot of land at Chala Village. In 1986 the Vapi Parish has got registered with the Commissioner of Registrar as a Public Trust and Society. The foundation stone for the parish was duly blessed by H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilos and the same was laid down by Rev. Fr. P. M. Mathew, the then Vicar, on 12th February, 1988. By the end of the same year, construction of the Church building completed, and started celebrating the Holy Qurbana in its own worship place. The final and permanent consecration of the Church was done by H. G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos on 8th December, 1998, after the completion of the construction of the ‘Holy Sanctum’ (Madhbaha). At present there are 82 subscribing members. There are four Prayer Meetings, Sunday school, MGOCSM, Youth Movement and two Vanitha Samajams, and by the grace of God all are functioning effectively, actively and creatively under the guidance and leadership of the Vicar. Rev. Fr. Paul Mathew is the present Vicar of this Parish.
