The St.George Orthodox Syrian Church,Akurdi-Chinchwad is one of the Parishes in Pune area of the Diocese of Bombay. The Pune parish was started during 1943 as a small congregration of the Orthodox Christian people who have migrated to Pune area seeking jobs. Later on Holy Qurbana was started regularly on all alternate Sundays in Pune and in Kirkee. In the year 1974 the erstwhile Pune parish was divided into St.Mary’s Church,Pune and St.Thomas Church,Kirkee,as members increased due to migration from various parts of Kerala,seeking their livelihood As there were a lot of industrial establishments in and around Pune and its suburbs,the Parishes stretched to other parts of Pune. Members residing in Pimpri-Chinchwad area,who were having Holy Qurbana and prayer meeting once in a month tried to establish their own parish in the Chinchwad area. Due to their strenuous efforts and hard work, they were able to purchase a plot of land in Dattawadi area at Akurdi under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Paul Mathew who was then the acting vicar appointed by the Metropolitan. The construction work of the church building was started under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Joshua John who was the vicar of St. Thomas Church, Kirkee The foundation stone of the church was laid on 16th October 1997. On 12th June 1999 His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilose conducted the temporary consecration of the church building. For the new St. George Orthodox Syrian Church, Chinchwad, Rev. Fr. Mathew Mathew was appointed as the vicar for conducting two services in a month. Thereafter Rev. Fr. Jacob Koshy was appointed as he vicar. Rev. Fr. Preisquillas Peter took charge as the vicar and some modifications to the building were conducted under his supervision. After that Rev. Fr. C J Joshua was appointed as the vicar and during his tenure the parish was able to cover up the pending liabilities to the parish. The Mooron koodasha of the church was conducted on 18th and 19th January 2008 by the Diocese Metropolitan ,His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilose Thereafter Rev.Fr. John Thomas was appointed as the vicar of the parish and he tried to strengthen the parish spiritually by activating various spiritual organizations. Sometime later Very Rev. Kuriakose Cor-Episcopa was appointed for conducting two services in the parish. Very Rev. Zacariah Cor Episcopa was appointed as the first full time vicar of the parish as he volunteered to come and stay in the vicinity of the parish in 2011 currently Rev. Fr. Sherin Thomas is the vicar of the parish. (draft uploaded to be updated)
