St. George Orthodox Syrian Church , Sakinaka


This parish came into existence by a ‘Kalpana’ of H. G. Dr. Philipose Mar Theophilus, the then Metropolitan of the Diocese of Bombay on 1st September, 1985 as St. George Orthodox Syrian Parish. In the year 1990, a small plot of land was acquired near Kherani Road to construct the church building. The foundation stone of the church was laid by Rev. Fr. M. Varghese assisted by Rev. Fr. Thomas Varghese on 24th March, 1990. The consecration of the church was held on the 19th and 20th of April 1997 by H. G Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, the then Assistant Metropolitan of the Diocese of Bombay. The Church progressed steadily and the Silver jubilee celebrations of the parish was celebrated in the year 2010 with various religious and philanthropic activities under the inspiring leadership of the then Vicar Rev. Fr. Yaunan Mulammoottil. Consecration of the renovated church and Georgian Jubilee Hall were held soon on 1st and 2nd May 2010 during the Jubilee Year itself. Registration of the parish, under the Society Registration Act 1860 was done at the office of the Charity Commissioner of Greater Mumbai area on 31st July 2010. The renovated Cross Vault was dedicated on 3rd October 2010 by H. G. Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, and a free Medical Clinic was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister of Maharashtra Shri. Arif Naseem Mohammad Khan. At present there are 96 families in the parish. Sunday school, MGOCSM, OCYM, MOMS, Prayer Fellowship (4 groups) and Elders Forum are functioning actively in the parish. Every Friday, at 7.30 evening there is Intercessory Prayer of St. Gregorios of Parumala and St. George. The main feast (Perunal) of the church is celebrated on the Martyrdom Day of St. George. Rev. Fr. T.U. Thomas is currently serving the Parish creditably as Vicar.
