Holy Qurbana (Eucharist) Sunday @ 08:30 AM
St. Thomas Malankara Orthodox Church was established 25 years ago in Lufkin, Texas (a small East Texas town). In the early years before the establishment of the church, few members from the Malankara (Indian) Orthodox Church began meeting at different locations and attended various other Christian denominations for Sunday services.
It was in 1989, the members decided that it was crucial for the community to begin a congregation that catered the needs of the members of the Malankara Orthodox Church in Lufkin.
The members then requested Late Lamented H.G. Thomas Mar Makarios, the Metropolitan of the American Diocese, to send a priest to Lufkin. Accordingly Rev. Fr. M.T. Philip came to Lufkin and celebrated Holy Qurbana in the hall of St.Cyprian’s Episcopal Church on December 17th, 1989.
In 1992, the members of the church desired to have their own place of worship and began to raise funds so as to buy a property under the leadership of Rev. Fr. M.T. Philip. With the help of the local Indian community and churches from other parts of the country, we bought the premises which is located at 2112 North Timberland Dr. Lufkin, TX 75901.
On October 17th, 1992, after the required renovations, L.L.H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas consecrated the church and the Holy Qurbana was celebrated. Ever since, this church has been growing slowly but steadily and now with 20 members, it is a full fledged church.
