The transfer of leadership from Elijah to Elisha is awe-inspiring. Elisha had been in training under Elijah 10 years. He has seen God deliver His people and reject the idol worshippers. He has seen the faithful helped and the unfaithful perish. Now it is time for Elijah to die and Elisha to take over. This is a tough time for sure. It is time for Elisha to step up and walk in Elijah’s shoes and he is going to lose his mentor and master.
God has made special provision for the widow and the orphan in Scripture. They were the responsibility of the community.
This widow cried out to Elisha because he was God’s representative, but who is she really crying out to? God, the defender of the fatherless and the husband to the widow.
Elisha’s response to this woman rightly reflected God’s attitude. Now to 2 Kings 4:2: “Elisha replied to her, ‘How can I help you?’” You see, he was sensitive, he was concerned, he was compassionate, he was willing to be involved, and so is God! He asked another question which I really love. He said, “Tell me, what do you have in your house?” (2 Kings 4:2b).
